This consultation provides neuropsychological and neurological assessment of forms of possible dementia. Discussions with relatives are also helpful in making a diagnosis. Often, an MRI examination of the brain is also requested. Statements are made about the exact diagnosis, treatment options, prognosis and appropriate patient management where necessary.

In addition to the patient’s medical history, simple psychometric tests such as the MMSE (Mini Mental State Examination) are helpful in making a diagnosis and assessing the course of Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. If these brief tests produce notable results, detailed diagnostic testing is available, e.g. CERAD, a more extensive battery of tests. An MRI examination of the brain is often requested.

If dementia is present, further detailed neurological diagnostic tests and treatments are provided. A range of medications can be offered to treat dementia or accompanying conditions such as sleep disorders or depression. Since patients are very often cared for by relatives, they are also included in the treatment.
